NEW YORK, NY - Uh oh! mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani listed Hamilton as his favorite musical in 2015, but a New York Times reporter looking for any fault at all didn’t see a single song from the musical on Mr. Mamdani's Spotify Wrapped that year.
“What gives?? What’s up with this liar?!” said Thomas Midori, a 52-year Italian voter from Queens. “This Mamdani guy can’t get his story straight. He didn't send a Snap to his friends rapping all of 'Guns & Ships' and we’re supposed to just give him the keys to city hall?”
Voter skepticism has been high since Mamdani swept the Democratic Primary in late June. It’s almost as if the city seeks to vote against its own interest, with dirt being dug up every day on the 33-year former assemblyman: everything from his deli order, to his marital relationship, to his subway commute has been scrutinized.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who will run as an independent against Mamdani on election day, weighed in.
“New Yorkers deserve someone they can trust, and more specifically, they deserve to see that Hamilton shows up on their mayor’s Spotify Wrapped from 2015. People want to see 'Wait for It' on there. They want to see 'Non-Stop' breaking the top 30. They need to know he belted out all the parts of 'Satisfied' along with the rest of you - I mean us - ruining his algorithm.”
New Yorkers aren’t new to this kind of scandal for political figures, however. This dereliction of musical-theatre-appreciation harkens back to current-Mayor Adams’ foreign bribes, or Rudy Giuliani’s fall from grace after attempting election-rigging.
Cuomo continued his criticism of his opponent, who is polling, like, 40 points ahead of him:
“You know, I really relate to Hamilton. I know what it’s like to be rejected by the public, and the experience of resigning from politics, to no fault of your own. It’s my favorite musical, hands down. And it’s not just because I think this will help me with the Latino vote."
So how does Mamdani explain this faux-pas? He claimed that, in 2015, he was listening to the musical’s album “as God intended: buying the vinyl and playing it in his Queens apartment with all the windows open while giving the best performance of 'One Last Time' you’ve ever heard.”
