COLUMBUS, Oh. — Local political activist and fresh-out-of-college barista Sara Stickles announced her upcoming debut today in the Columbus Players’ production of Cabaret. Also announced today by Stickles; the theatre organization’s ongoing discussion on the importance of content warnings.
“It’s, like, totally problematic,” said Stickles between mouthfuls of her free shift drink. “I had no idea what the show was about before auditioning. And now, my Trumpie parents want to watch me sing about minorities being rounded up, and I have to do the dirty work of telling my parents not to see it?”
Stickles continued, still fisting her oatmilk latte: “That’s the whole point of a content warning. To dissuade your parents from seeing the show."
William Matthews, Marketing & Publicity Director of the Variety Players, and also former fan of Coldplay, followed up on our request to comment.
“Like any theatre house, we take this new trend of content warnings very seriously,” said Matthews, while standing near framed photographs of questionable make-up decisions from the Players’ "historic" production history. “But sometimes, we feel that content warnings spoil the show for our audience. And also, screw your parents, Sara.”
Matthews, while shuffling comically shiny gold coins in his hands, pushed back on Sara’s advocacy.
“Y’know, we’ve found really great success in avoiding content warnings. Like, when that teen support group came to see our production of Next To Normal. They were so moved!”
“It’s not just about my parents,” said Sara while booting up ChatGPT for her upcoming therapy session. “We can’t just traumatize people without warning. Besides, what content warnings are even necessary for Cabaret? It’s just a show about humanity, or suffering, or something. What’s unsettling about that?”
When asked for a follow-up, Stickles sent in only a change.org petition. We did not respond.
