White Liberals, Rejoice! Manhattan Theatre Club Adds Joe Biden Inauguration to Upcoming Season

by Annette Storckman. @astorcks.

NEW YORK, NY - Broadway may be closed, but the spirit of needlessly expensive productions has not left one hallowed theatre company. Manhattan Theatre Club, or MTC, well regarded as a bastion of tepid liberalism, announced that it will be producing Joe Biden’s inauguration as part of their Winter 2021 season, “because of course they are,” sources confirmed.

“We have to play to our base. Our subscribers are a diverse group covering both the Upper West and East sides, and they LOVE Joe Biden,” defended Artistic Director Sarah Goodes amid criticism by the Broadway community that the move is “predictable,” “boring,” and “leaves no excuse for a turntable”. “At the end of the day, we have to give the people what they want: full, working kitchens on stage, and easily digestible centrism.”

The Broadway Beat travelled all the way up to 75th street after proving they were not, in fact, homeless rabble rousers, to follow up with the MTC base. Long-time subscriber and Central Park West bird woman, Theodora Vanderpickle, shared her thoughts on The Inauguration.

“I couldn’t be more excited for the new production and even more excited to go to brunch before the matinee,” noted Vanderpickle, who somehow has box seats to the inauguration. “I mean, finally, a President that is going to align with my values. Representation really does matter!”

But defeated grumblings can still be heard from underpaid MFA graduates fighting for an entry level job in artistic administration. After the events of the summer of 2020, many had hoped that Broadway would usher in a new era of inclusivity and bold artistic choices. But many seem resigned to the future, including Adolpho Ray Vonto, recent alum of the Public Emerging Writers Group.

“Look, do I want radical change for Broadway? Of course I do. But these are the cards we’ve been dealt, and hey, at least it isn’t another soulless cash grab, right? All we can hope is that new voices like Jeremy O. Harris will push establishment houses like MTC further left.”

Ticket sales for the inauguration are not expected to recoup, but we do predict a revival in the next four years. In the meantime, we can look forward to Joe Biden taking the oath of office in a full replica of a Berkshires summer home, and swearing on a live lobster boil while family secrets are shared in the next room.
